What To Eat Before & After Your Workout

What do I eat before and after my workout? I see this question being posted a lot around the web so I thought I’d make a post about it. Hopefully, my advice will help you all out.

First I’ll tell you some of the things I eat before and after my workouts be it cardio or strength and then I’ll tell you what Tosca Reno recommends.  I workout in the evenings between 6:30-8pm so I workout kind of late.  For some reason I cannot workout in the early mornings, but that’s a different story, another time, a different day (ha!).

bK’s Before / After Workout Meals

Before my workout it’s usually meal 5 for me so I’ll grab a medium apple and a TBSP of natural peanut butter, a small banana and a couple of TBSPs of whipped cottage cheese (1% milkfat) or a handful of walnuts and dried apricots.

After my workout, I always put together (via my blender) a protein shake that contains either soy milk or almond milk, a couple of large strawberries and a TBSP of ground flaxseed if it’s not time for dinner yet.  If it’s dinner time then I eat my dinner.

Tosca’s Before / After Workout Meals

In an email I received today from The Eat-Clean Diet website, Tosca   Reno suggests that before a workout have a banana and a glass of almond milk, apple with a handful of nuts or non-fat plain yogurt with berries.  After a workout, Tosca suggests grilled chicken breast with sweet potato, egg whites with tomato and steamed spinach or protein shake with fresh fruit

Hints / Tips

You will want to eat your after workout meal within one hour after you have finished your workout.  The key to eating clean is always putting meals together that contain a lean protein and a good carb every time you go to eat and you should be eating up to 6 small meals per day.  Don’t forget to subscribe to Tosca’s blog because she’s the best when it comes to clean eating and she has lot of clean meal plans to share on her site as well.  Her handy grocery list can be found in a .pdf file  here:  DOWNLOAD IT!

Love Tosca! Great tips from you & her!
I always have almonds with a banana or apple, fruit with a nut butter, or something similar pre-workout & and bigger, protein heavier meal after my workout.
Her grocery list is always in my purse (it’s a great reference)!

I saw her books the other day when I was browsing at the book store. What do you recommend as her intro book? My most current cookbook I purchased was Super Natural Cooking by Heidi Swanson.

I always get confused about what to eat during and after my work-outs, but I usually just stick to what I’ve planned out for meals during the day and I’m good to go!
